Spotlighting Narrative Pedagogy in Nursing Education

Spotlighting Narrative Pedagogy in Nursing Education fills a void in literature by highlighting the pedagogical application of storytelling within modern nursing education. The incorporation of narrative pedagogy in nursing curriculum aligns with the current movement within the profession to reimagine the ways in which educators can most effectively prepare student nurses to holistically interact, care for, and advocate for their patients. Opening chapters define purposive storytelling, present a theoretical framework based on aesthetic narrative pedagogy and literary reader-response theory, and outline specific roles of the storyteller and the listener/reader. Additional chapters outline how stories are processed in the brain differently than other forms of instruction and how narrative pedagogy can be used to accomplish nursing education objectives. The book presents teaching strategies which can easily incorporate narrative pedagogy, to include digitalization of storytelling. Closing chapters address how storytelling can enhance a diverse array of topics such as critical thinking, ethics, nurse identity formation, and healthy workplace environments. Integration of narrative pedagogy supports the 21st-century call for transformation in nursing education. Spotlighting Narrative Pedagogy in Nursing Education is an exemplary resource for nurse educators as well as nursing education programs and courses. This book underscores the importance of utilizing storytelling as an adjunct pedagogy in the education of all professional nurses.
