The first complete genome sequences of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum was published in 2002, and in the decade since, genome-scale data sets from more species of Plasmodium and related organisms have been deposited in public databases. Biological and medical specialists in the tropical disease highlight some of the research that has resulted. Their topics include the Apicomplexan genomic landscape: the evolutionary context of Plasmodium, Plasmodium genomics and the art of sequencing malaria parasite genomes, Plasmodium experimental genetic crosses, the invasion of host red blood cells by malaria parasites, host cell remodeling and protein trafficking, and the malariologist's molecular toolbox.
