Suneson begins with a geologic history of the State of Oklahoma, describing such processes as mountain building, basin forming, erosion, aquifer formation, and the genesis of oil and coal from the Proterozoic Eon through the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Eras to the Cenozoic Era. Then he surveys the geology of today in the various regions of the state: the High Plains, the Redbed Plains and Sandstone Hills, the Eastern Mountains and Hill Country, and the Arbuckle and Wichita Mountains.
