For over 20 years, Eastwood had been studying Medieval texts and manuscripts of the Roman authors Pliny the Elder, Macrobius, Martianus, and Calcidius, and especially the astronomical diagrams each contained or stimulated. He and Grasshoff began collaborating in 1997 on analyzing the diagrams and using them to reveal how the editors of the manuscripts understood the texts at various times and places even as late as the 15th century.
