Fubini, a businessman in Boston, narrates the life of his father Eugene (1913-97), originally for the benefit of his own children and grandchildren. He describes him as a prodigal physicist who fled Italy when the fascists came to power, and rose to become an architect of the US Defense Department, advising appointed and elected officials and uniformed military officers. Among the highlights of his account are Rome and Fermi, Columbia Broadcasting, fighting for the Allies, the Defense Department and intramural conflicts, IBM and Connecticut, the Herold Brown era and the Defense Science Board, and sickness and loss of family.
