Zhong (Chinese literature and culture, Tufts U.) presents a discussion of the cultural context of Chinese television dramas. Arguing that equating these programs with American "soap operas" fails to account for historical and cultural differences in perceived meaning, this volume addresses the unique Chinese themes within the form. Topics discussed include history, "emperor dramas" and historical consciousness, "anti-corruption" themes and their ideological implications, "youth dramas" and the post-revolutionary search for idealism and women and the ideology of happiness.
