Using the concept of differentiated instruction, present and former English teachers DeCourcey, Fairchild (Duke U.), and Follet (Cary Academy, North Carolina) describe an approach to teaching Romeo and Juliet that takes into account student readiness levels, interests, and learning styles. After an overview of differentiated instruction, lessons, activities, and handouts are presented for each act. Activities include cinematic and dramatic interpretation, creative writing, group work, and Socratic discussion. Lesson plans for specific scenes are incorporated, as are quizzes.
