This study for scholars aims for a conversational tone punctuated by occasional humor, exploring the definition and purpose of hope and presenting a new concept of tragic hope, when hope remains even after loss. The study draws on insights and inspiration found in Western literature, such as works by Shakespeare and Dickens, as well as the ideas of classic and contemporary philosophers including Wittgenstein, Kant, Aquinas, Saint Paul, Karl Marx, Water Benjamin, and Matt Ridley. There is special emphasis on the ideas of philosopher Enrst Bloch and his The Principle of Hope. The study also integrates ideas from theology and political theory. The book grew out of the Page-Barbour Lectures delivered by the author at the University of Virginia in 2014. Annotation 2016 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
