In waging the War of 1812 against the British, Madison (1751- 1836) became the first US president to assume the new role of commander-in-chief authorized by the Constitution. This volume contains Madison's chronologically-arranged correspondence and messages to Congress (some in full and others in abstract form) concerning this and other situations (e.g., relations with Indians), negotiations with other European nations, and documents relating to the election of 1812. The volume includes a timeline of events Madison was involved in during this six-month period; a roster of his re-organized Cabinet and other high-ranking officials; information on source depositories; and extensive footnotes.
