Though concerned with relations between Jews and Christians generally, Cunningham focuses on Catholics because he is Catholic, because the Catholic community has a centralized teaching magisterium that for several decades has been seriously addressing relations with Jews, and because of the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council's statement Nostra Aetate. This document, he says, proved to be a momentous milestone in the Catholic Church's relationship to non-Christian religions, including Judaism. Looking in turn at scripture and theology, he discusses such aspects as Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism as branches from the root of Second-Temple Judaism, the Gospels and their presentations of Judaism, magisterial contributions toward a "theology of shalom," and Jews as covenanting with a triune God.
