Based on research and evidence-based practices, this book outlines five levels of language development in English language learners in kindergarten through eighth grade. Each chapter addresses one level of language acquisition, the common characteristics of learners at each stage, and instructional strategies for each level, focusing on visual support, learning by doing, oral language production, and reading and writing support for the levels of beginning exposure to English with limited language production, demonstrating receptive and emerging productive language skills, using basic oral and written language skills with predictable error patterns, using more advanced oral and written language skills with fewer errors, and approximating native language proficiency. The book emphasizes five principles: an assets-based philosophy of teaching and a strengths-based approach to each student; individual variations in students; integrated content, language, and literacy instruction; culturally and linguistically sustaining instruction and assessment practices; and purposeful interaction and collaboration.
