Java is such a rapidly evolving language, it can be difficult for developers to keep abreast of developments. It has moved beyond a lnaguage used just for creating Web-based applets to one that is being used for developing serious applications. Key Java is intended for those who already know the Java language, the classes and the tools, but who want to get more out of Java. They are wanting to know about subjects such as good Java style for reusable components, about using Java beans, about the JDBC, about optimising their code, about testing their code appropriately and about using the IFC, tools and the new JFC. This book explores some of the more significant and exciting developments in Java. It covers techniques that will be fundamental to programmers developing significant applications in Java. Each of the self-contained chapters looks beyond the mechanics of coding applications and explores the concepts that will prove vital to getting the most out of the Java language. 1 Introduction.- 2 Inheritance and Reuse.- 3 Persistent Storage of Objects.- 4 Introductory JavaBeans.- 5 JavaBeans in Depth.- 6 Java DataBase Connectivity.- 7 The Web and JDBC.- 8 File-Based Storage Classes.- 9 Frameworks.- 10 Patterns for Documenting Frameworks.- 11 Testing Object-Oriented Systems.- 12 Testing Java Code.- 13 Assertions in Java.- 14 Performance: Tooling Up.- 15 Optimizing for Speed.- 16 Optimizing for Memory.- 17 Future Evaluators.- 18 Real-Time Java.- 19 Evolution of the Java User Interface.- 20 The Internet Foundation Classes.- 21 Swinging with the Java Foundation Classes.- 22 Graphical Java Media.- 23 User Interface Design Issues in Java.
